Mewtwo always triumphs – Psychic attackers to reach the glory

Hello everyone! This is Elena from Gaia Storm TCG and welcome to another article here at CCG Castle. Today, I want to talk about one of the decks that have been gaining more and more popularity over the past few weeks and that features the most versatile Tag Team Pokémon ever created: Mew & Mewtwo Tag Team.

As you all know by now, Mewtwo’s incredible ability allows it to copy one attack from a GX Pokémon that you have on the field or in the discard pile. The flexibility of this effect explains why Mewtwo has always remained as one of the top decks in the format regardless of the time (not to mention that it still holds the title of Word Champion!). What explains Mewtwo’s sudden return to the Tier 1 stop is the fact that Urshifu VMAX has been played in very high counts in the most recent tournaments. In fact, Urshifu has a psychic weakness and has little outs to deal with a fully charged Mewtwo Tag Team that is using Stealthy Hood to protect itself.

There were different versions of Mewtwo being played when the format began: with Welder, with Victini VMAX and with Rillaboom from Sword and Shield but the one build that has truly proved to be a top pick for this environment is the pure psychic version. Psychic Mewtwo has great advantages because of the amount of powerful psychic hitters it can run like Gengar Mimikyu Tag Team or Trevenant Dusknoir Tag Team, very strong Pokémon that can’t fit in any other version. With them, Mewtwo acquires a completely new dimension, being able to lock the opponent for a turn with the GX movement of Gengar Mimikyu and then reducing their options with a deadly combination of Marnie and then Trevenant Dusknoir to leave your opponent with just 2 cards in hand.

The only real weakness that the deck has is that it lacks energy acceleration so it really suffers against anything that runs (and hits) Crushing Hammers. But luckily for Mewtwo, there are not many decks now that are using energy disruption cards and considering that it has a fair chance against most of the popular strategies, it has become an instant favorite for the community. And guess what? Mewtwo is only going to become better with the next expansion. I don’t want to spoil things because we will have plenty of time to talk about all the amazing new cards that are coming in Chilling Reign, the upcoming set, but let me just say that there is a ton of psychic support that will take Mewtwo to a whole new level!

So, in conclusion, if you are currently looking to build a deck that can counter one of the most played decks of the metagame, that has a solid performance against most of the strategies and that will continue to improve with future releases, then Mewtwo is a great option. Don’t forget to get you cards here at CCG! Thanks for reading.
